FRIDAY 17, MARCH 2017

Hello good nigth we are going to show you some many importants things that you need to know about the puctuation and capitalization

                                         PUNCTUATION AND CAPITALIZATION

PUNTUACTION:  They show the reader where sentences start and finish and if they are used properly they make your writing easy to understand. There are also sections which offer advice on using punctuation when writing direct speech, lists, or abbreviations

apostrophe (')

The best way to get apostrophes right is to understand when and why they are used. There are two main cases.

Apostrophes showing possession :You use an apostrophe to show that a thing or person belongs or relates to someone or something

  1. Singular nouns and most personal names
  2. Personal names that end in –s
  3. Plural nouns that end in –s
  4. Plural nouns that do not end in -s

Apostrophes showing omission :An apostrophe can be used to show that letters or numbers have been omitted. Here are some examples of apostrophes that indicate missing letters

                                                            BULLET POINTS

Bullet points are used to draw attention to important information within a document so that a reader can identify the key issues and facts quickly. There are no fixed rules about how to use them.

                                          colon (:)

There are three main uses of the colon:

between two main clauses in cases where the second clause explains or follows from the first:
  1. That is the secret of my extraordinary life: always do the unexpected.
  2. It wasn’t easy: to begin with, I had to find the right house.

  • to introduce a list:
  1. The price includes the following: travel to London, flight to Venice, hotel acommodation, and excursions.
  2. The job calls for skills in the following areas: proofing, editing, and database administration.

  • before a quotation, and sometimes before direct speech,
  1. The headline read: ‘Taxi Driver Battles Gangsters’.
  2. They shouted: ‘Our families are starving! We need land!
                                       comma (,)

A comma marks a slight break between different parts of a sentence. Used properly, commas make the meaning of sentences clear by grouping and separating words, phrases, and clauses.

                                         exclamation mark
  1. The main use of the exclamation mark  is to end sentences that express an exclamation
  2. direct speech that represents something shouted or spoken very loudly
  3. something that amuses  the writer:
  4. An exclamation mark can also be used in brackets after a statement to show that the writer finds it funny or ironic

                                                      full stop / period

Full stops are used
  1. to mark the end of a sentence that is a complete statement
  2. to mark the end of a group of words that don’t form a conventional sentence, so as to emphasize a statement
  3. in some abbreviations, for example etc., Dec., or p.m
  4. in website and email addresses
CAPITALIZATION : is when the costs to acquire an asset are expensed over the life of that asset rather than in the period it was incurred. In finance, capitalization is the sum of a corporation's stock, long-term debt and retained earnings. Capitalization also refers to the number of outstanding shares multiplied by share price .

  1. Capitalize the first word of a document and the first word after a period.
  2. Capitalize proper nouns—and adjectives derived from proper nouns.
  3. Capitalize titles when they are used before names, unless the title is followed by a comma. Do not capitalize the title if it is used after a name or instead of a name
  4.  Capitalize nicknames in all cases
  5. Capitalize specific geographical regions. Do not capitalize points of the compass
